Geotechnical experts have started work at the Nithi Bridge, using drilling rigs to collect soil samples that will determine the most suitable place to build a modern bridge.
Accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, President William Ruto told residents in Chuka Town that his administration is fully committed to building a modern and safe Nithi Bridge.
He regretted the pain and loss of lives occasioned by road crashes at Nithi Bridge over the past years, assuring locals that this is going to end during his tenure.
“We made a promise that we will build a new modern and safe bridge because the Nithi Bridge has caused problems and loss of lives for many years,” President Ruto said.
“We endeavor to leave behind a legacy of solutions, not excuses. My assurance to you is that we now have a solution for Nithi Bridge,” he added.

Detailed Geotechnical Survey to Ensure Safety and Durability of New Nithi Bridge Commences
In a separate interview, Muthoka Obadiah, a Geotechnical Engineer, underscored the significance of soil sampling before construction of any mega project, saying it determines the safety and durability of the structure.
He attributed the stability of government buildings and key structures to thorough processes, including soil sampling before construction of any foundation. “The government is very keen to make sure that an investigation is done to find the right position or the right depth for the foundations,” he said.
At the same time, Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli outlined the key steps that they are taking before construction work begins.
He said that they have already conducted public participation, mapped the affected lands, and carried out soil sampling.
In addition, Eng. Kimeli announced fresh details about the project, saying that the main structure will be elevated 100 meters high from the ground, while the road approaches will stretch for about 3 kilometers.

The bridge is 800 metres long, he said, adding that the redesign, realignment and reconstruction of the bridge will address the long history of accidents that has occasioned loss of lives.
“KeNHA is undertaking a comprehensive re-design and realignment of the Nithi Bridge together with the approach roads, with the sole aim of improving safety and addressing,” Eng. Kimeli said.
The KeNNHA boss acknowledged the support demonstrated by the members of the public during the stakeholder sensitisation saying the enthusiasm was clear to see.
“The agency has also mapped out the land to be acquired for the construction works,” he pointed out, adding that geotechnical investigations are going on to enable a detailed design to be produced for construction purposes.
