The family of Benedict Kabiru, a Kenyan police officer who disappeared while taking part in the Multi-National Security Support (MSS) mission in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, has written to Attorney General (AG) Dorcas Oduor, demanding an official statement on whether he is alive or dead.
The family has issued a 30-day ultimatum to the government to explain his whereabouts or face court action.
“We have formally written to the AG and requested a written, unconditional information about Kabiru,” Mbuthi Gathenji, the family lawyer, stated.
Kabiru’s family has accused the government of silence and conflicting information from Haiti.
Philip Kamau Kuria, the officer’s brother, said the Kenyan government said Kabiru was missing, while Haiti’s government issued different information.
Kuria said they are not aware whether Kabiru is alive or dead a month since they first received the information.
“The government of Kenya said he was missing in action, but the press release from Haiti is not saying the same thing. So, as a family, we are confused and in the dark. We don’t know if our kin is dead or alive,” Kuria said.
Govt Should Provide Updates
His uncle, Daniel Kabiru asked the government to provide information regarding investigations into the matter.
He also accused the government of operating in silence, leaving the family uninformed with a lot of anxiety about their son.
“The government, which is Kabiru’s employer, should remove our distress and anxiety by telling us the truth. They should update us on the progress of the investigations and tell us whether he is there or not, instead of leaving us in the dark,” Daniel said.
The family has threatened to seek court orders compelling the government to disclose the officer’s whereabouts if their demands are not met.
“We want direct confirmation from Haiti itself. This daily narrative about an ongoing search is exhausting,” the lawyer added.

Benedict Kabiru Goes Missing
Kabiru went missing on March 25, 2025, during a rescue mission in Haiti.
He disappeared days after another Kenyan police officer, Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai, was killed in Haiti after being attacked by criminal gangs.
Kabiru went missing four months before he was due to return home, with Kenyan police having now served in Haiti for over ten months as part of the MSS mission, fighting violent gangs that control large parts of the country, including Port-au-Prince.
Viral Video on Social Media
On April 5, MSS Spokesperson Jack Ombaka dismissed videos circulated on social media alleging that Kabiru has been killed.
Ombaka said the videos had been doctored using Artificial Intelligence (AI) by Haiti-based gangs, which he said, “thrive on propaganda.”
“About the video, one thing that is very clear here in Haiti is that many of the Haitian gangs thrive on propaganda. That video in circulation, and more so in the advent of AI, it is very unlikely that it is a video of Benedict,” he said.

“I can tell you for a fact with all the information that we have that video is not authentic.”
Additionally, Ombaka said his Office also doubles as the Office of the Director of Strategic Communication.
He explained that the two offices were merged into one to ensure that information reaches the target audience as quickly as possible.
He stated that the first step the mission took was to contact the officer’s next of kin and family members.
