Two Kenyan police officers in Haiti, part of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS), have been injured during an attack by Haitian gangs.
The officers were hurt during routine patrols in and around the capital, Port-au-Prince.

According to Reuters, one officer was shot in the head after a bullet pierced his helmet and hit his ear when a gunshot penetrated the walls of an armored vehicle.
Three officers told Reuters they have witnessed an increasing number of casualties due to constant ambushes by the Haitian gangs and expressed concerns about a lack of adequate equipment during such attacks.
Haiti MSS Kenyan Spokesperson Speaks
According to the three police officers, twenty police vehicles remain unused due to their inability to protect against bullets.
“MSS continues to receive increased logistical support from partners and stakeholders, with assurances that all equipment meets international standards,” clarified MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka in a statement to Reuters.

Ombaka also confirmed that two officers had been evacuated to the Dominican Republic for medical care. Additionally, two senior MSS officers mentioned that a delegation is set to travel to Washington to address concerns about the quality of protective gear.
The United Stated Government has been playing the role of funding for the equipment during the mission.

Kenyan Police Officers Suffer Fatalities
Recently, one Kenyan police officer, part of the MSS in Haiti, was rushed to the hospital after being injured.
According to MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka, the officer sustained injuries during an operation on March 18, 2025.
This incident comes a month after the death of another Kenyan police officer, Samuel Kaitwai, who was killed in an operation. The officer was evacuated to the LEVEL 2 hospital at LSA 1, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Kenyan Haiti Mission
The Kenyan-led mission was aimed at helping the nation in order to combat the rampant gang violence experienced over the years that has seen criminal gangs’ control at least 80% of the capital Port-Au-Prince.
It was approved by the UN Security Council in 2023 with the aim of restoring peace and security for Haiti to hold elections in 2026. Later, the United Stated (US) Government took the role of funding for the equipment during the mission.
