Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has broken silence following the dismissal of former Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u from the Cabinet by President William Ruto.

DP Gachagua was speaking on Friday, July 26, 2024, in Laikipia County during the funeral service for the mother to Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau, an event which Prof. Ndung’u was also attending.

The DP while commenting on Prof. Ndung’u’s ouster said that he was proud of the former CS’s performance during his stint in the Cabinet, further asking him to hold his head high as he hands over to the next office holder.

Rigathi highlighted Njuguna Ndungu’s firm stewardship at the helm of the Treasury docket, saying that he came in at a time the Kenyan economy was struggling.

“I want to take this opportunity to really thank Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u for your very outstanding performance at the National Treasury.

I want to say that we are very proud of you as our son from this region for where you found our economy and for your stewardship of the National Treasury,” said Gachagua.

DP Gachagua encouraged the former CS to hold his head high when handing over to President Ruto’s nominee and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party chairman John Mbadi, if approved by Parliament.

The DP further highlighted that former CS Prof. Ndung’u was a dedicated state officer who worked till late hours.

Rigathi said that the Mt Kenya region was behind Prof. Ndung’u, further encouraging him that once a door closes, another opens.

“As you hand over to the new nominee walk with your head tall. You worked hard for late hours and when you came to Cabinet and presented clear and concrete proposals. We encourage you that when God closes one door God opens another door and we wish you well but as you retreat know that we are very proud of your achievements,” added Gachagua.

While speaking on the Cabinet Changes, DP Rigathi dismissed critics making conclusions that certain regions had lost, pointing out that it is a win for all Kenyans.

Gachagua at the same time lauded the Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau, for her commitment and highlighted that her presence at the Cabinet is also a win for the Mt Kenya region.

“I have seen all sort of people including newspapers, analysts and commentators commenting about gains and losses, which region got what, which one didn’t, which one lost, who is strong who isn’t, I think the whole thing is a win for the people of Kenya,” Gachagua pointed out.

“For us as a region we are very happy that Mercy Wanjau adds our numbers, and we are very proud as her performance as a daughter of this region and her commitment to the Public Service and assisting the President in the management of the affairs of this country.”

The DP further urged Kenyans to remain united as a country while also calling out those who took advantage of well-organized anti-government peaceful protests to steal, loot, and cause chaos.

Ex-CS Prof. Ndun’gu was among casualties of President Ruto’s decision to dissolve the Cabinet and dismiss all CSs except for Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi.

Ndung’u was not included in the list of nominees announced by Ruto in his fresh look “broad-based” Cabinet.

The Head of State nominated ODM party chairman John Mbadi to take over from the former Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) governor.

Ruto on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, announced Mbadi as a nominee for the National Treasury slot during a state of the nation address at State House Nairobi.

Ruto also nominated former governors Ali Hassan Joho (Mombasa) and Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega) as CSs for Mining and Co-operatives respectively.

On the other hand, Ugunja Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Opiyo Wandayi was nominated to the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum.
