Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang Nyong’o underwent a successful spinal surgery at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Prof Nyong’o announced that he was admitted to the facility on Friday, July 14 for the operation.
“Everything has gone extremely well, and I am grateful to the hospital CEO, Dr. George Rae and his team for taking very good care of me,” said Nyong’o.
Nyong’o mentioned that the operation is an indication that local hospitals can treat diseases and conditions that citizens often fly overseas to receive.
“It is now very clear to me that even with the existing resources, both human and technical, we have the capacity to treat conditions that we sometimes shy away from and end up spending huge personal resources elsewhere.”
“Thank you Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for literally saving my back!” he tweeted.
Prof Nyong’o was discharged on Saturday, July 15 and has resumed normal duties Monday, July 17.
“I am so happy. I am feeling very okay. I can now walk and sit with ease. Many people could not imagine such a surgery can be done in a public hospital,” said Nyong’o.
Atlanta Neurosurgery Team
The governor thanked Dr Bethwel Raore and his neurosurgery team from Atlanta.
He stated that the team proved that with adequate skill development, complicated surgeries can be carried successfully here in Kenya.
Further, Nyong’o expressed his commitment to the Atlanta team revealing that they have been visiting the facility yearly for the last five years.
Nyong’o, a close ally of opposition leader Raila Odinga, failed to attend the Azimio rally in Siaya on Saturday.
Nyong’o Prostate Cancer Battle
Doctors diagnosed Prof Nyong’o with prostate cancer in July 2010.
In addition, during this time, he was Minister for Medical Services and he sought treatment in San Francisco, United States.
In 2018, Nyong’o informed the residents of Kisumu County that he was healed from prostate cancer.
Hip Replacement Surgery
In 2018, Prof Nyong’o announced that he injured his hip bone in an accident, but he failed to seek medical attention due to campaign schedules.
Moreover, the governor stated that it was during the same year his doctors in Nairobi discovered he had a hip bone crack.
Medics advised him to seek further medical attention prompting him to fly to the US.
In 2019, Nyong’o’s wife Dorothy Nyong’o and daughter, Lupita Nyong’o received an award from Harlem School of the Arts for their role in creating cancer awareness across the globe.
Nyong’o remains vocal in urging the government to invest in research and personnel in the fight against cancer.
