The Interior Ministry has advised President William Ruto to investigate and deal with questioned and suspicious deaths reported in the country.

In a statement, the ministry indicated that many lives were lost, property destroyed, and families deprived of livelihoods because of the infiltration of goons among peaceful protestors across the country.

Additionally, the Interior Ministry noted that although police were not allowed to use excessive force, they were permitted to do so when necessary.

“Security agencies are under instruction to exercise restraint during peaceful protests and use of non-lethal force to ensure public safety.

“The police can indeed be compelled to use reasonable force when isolated and specific scenarios of protests escalate to criminalities including rioting, looting and burning of properties,

“Disruption of traffic through erection of roadblocks on major highways and invasion of critical and protected infrastructure,” the statement read in part.

Consequently, the Ministry has recommended initiation of the process of establishing the office of the Coroner General to investigate the deaths.

The Coroner General, the Interior department notes, will be responsible for investigating deaths as a result of police brutality and ensure transparency in cases of suspicious deaths.

“The ministry recommended to the president to initiate the process of establishing the Coroner General’s office as per the National Coroners Service Act 2017 to investigate deaths including those resulting from police action,

“The Coroner General’s office will also ensure accountability and transparency in cases of suspicious deaths,” noted the statement.

So far, the Kenya National Commission for Huma Rights (KNHCR) has detailed that 50 people have been killed and 413 injured in anti-government protests, with 59 others abducted or missing.

Updates on Mukuru Kwa Njenga Mutilated Bodies

The Mukuru Community Justice Centre stated that police were stranded at City Mortuary with two more bodies retrieved from Kware dumpsite due to the anti-government protests,

According to the community centre, the morgue was closed and roads leading to the location had been blocked.

“Police are stranded with two bodies at kware police station as we are being informed that the city mortuary has been closed today as protests continue in kware and the outer ring road is blocked,” it stated.

Additionally, the centre has called out to Kenyans to help rescue a man commonly referred to as ‘Pastor wa Vijana’ who had been helping the community retrieve bodies from the Kware dumpsite.

In a statement, Mukuru Community Centre said that the man had been arrested by police officers.

“Pastor wa vijana one of the divers who has been helping to retrieve the bodies at kware pit has been arrested by police officers it’s alleged he is detained at Ruben police station. Youths are protesting demanding for his release,” the statement read.
