Jeff Koinange is one of Kenya’s most prominent journalists, broadcasters, and talk show hosts, widely respected for his hard-hitting interviews and commanding presence on television.
Currently the face of Jeff Koinange Live on Citizen TV, he has enjoyed a remarkable career covering local and international media, including time with CNN and Reuters.
He was born on January 7, 1966, in Nairobi. Jeff hails from a family deeply rooted in Kenya’s history.
He is the grandson of the late Koinange Wa Mbiyu, a key figure in Kenya’s independence movement.
Education
Koinange’s academic journey began at St. Mary’s High School in Nairobi, where he completed his secondary education in 1984.
He later moved to the United States, where he studied at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, New York, from 1987to 1989, graduating with top honors in Broadcast Technology and Management.
From there, he proceeded to New York University from 1989 to 1991, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism.

Jeff’s Family
Jeff is married to Shaila Koinange, and the couple has one son, Jamal Mbiyu Koinange. Raised by his mother after the passing of his father, Jeff has often credited her for the sacrifices she made to support him and his siblings.
He also shares family ties with former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Career
Before breaking into journalism, Jeff briefly worked as a flight attendant for Pan Am, which provided him with global exposure and inspired his passion for storytelling.
His first major step into media came with Reuters Television, where he served as a correspondent covering major stories across Africa.
His big break came at CNN, where he was appointed Africa Correspondent. At CNN, Jeff reported on some of the continent’s most pressing stories, including the wars in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Darfur, Sudan.
He made history as the first African to serve as an anchor on the global news network, cementing his reputation as a world-class journalist.
After leaving CNN, Jeff returned to Kenya and became the face of K24 TV, where he hosted Capital Talk, a program that featured interviews with political leaders, celebrities, and opinion-shapers.
His unique style quickly made the show a household name.
He later joined Arise Television in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he covered pan-African stories, before returning to Kenya to launch Jeff Koinange Live on KTN in 2013.
The program became a staple of Kenyan political and social discourse, attracting high-profile guests and nationwide viewership.
In 2017, Jeff moved to Citizen TV under Royal Media Services, where Jeff Koinange Live continues to air.
Alongside television, he co-hosted the Hot 96 FM breakfast show and served as a judge on East Africa’s Got Talent in 2019.
In addition to broadcasting, Jeff is also an accomplished author. His memoir, Through My African Eyes, captures his journey through the highs and lows of a career that has taken him around the world.

He is also a Master of Ceremonies, having hosted high-profile events for organizations such as the African Development Bank (AfDB), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Awards and Recognition
Jeff Koinange’s extraordinary career has earned him numerous accolades, including the Television Emmy he won in 2005 for his coverage of the famine in Niger.
In 2006, he won the George Foster Peabody Awards for his reporting on the Hurricane in Karatina. In the same year, he won the Prix Bayeux for War Correspondents for reporting on the civil war in Congo.
For the Diageo Awards for Business Reporting in Africa, he was a finalist for his continued nominations in business journalism.
At the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS), he was given a national honor of Kenya for his contributions to journalism.
In 2021, he was named the most stylish Male Media Personality at the Couture Africa Style Awards, among others.
