National carrier Kenya Airways and East Africa’s busiest airport, the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), have been feted.
Kenya Airways in a statement on October 19 announced that the airline has been feted as Africa’s Leading Airline 2024 at the World Travel Awards (WTA).
According to the statement, Kenya Airways won the Africa’s Leading Airline 2024 category, the Africa’s Leading Airline – Business Class 2024, and the Africa’s Leading Airline Brand 2024 awards.
Its weekly magazine also won the Africa’s Leading Inflight Magazine 2024: Msafiri award.
“Proud moments for us at the 2024 World Travel Awards! Here’s what we’ve brought home: – Africa’s Leading Airline 2024 – Africa’s Leading Airline – Business Class 2024 – Africa’s Leading Airline Brand 2024 – Africa’s Leading Inflight Magazine 2024: Msafiri,” the statement reads.
Kenya Airways added, “These wins are a reflection of the trust and support from our customers. Thank you for flying with us and being part of our story!”
On the other hand, JKIA has been crowned as Africa’s leading airport in the year 2024, according to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).

JKIA Crowned best airport in Africa
KAA made the announcement while noting that the award rubberstamps its commitment to improving passenger experience.
JKIA edged out six other airports across the African countries. These include Cape Town International Airport (South Africa), Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (Morocco) and Julius Nyerere International Airport (Tanzania).
Others include the Kigali International Airport (Rwanda), King Shaka International Airport, Durban (South Africa) and O.R. Tambo International Airport (South Africa).
“We are thrilled to announce that Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has been crowned Africa’s Leading Airport 2024 at the prestigious World Travel Awards!” said KAA.
“This win reflects JKIA’s unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional service, enhancing operational efficiency, and continuously improving the passenger experience.”

The award was received by KAA Managing Director Henry Ogoye, Acting JKIA Airport Manager, Selina Gor, and General Manager, Marketing and Business Development, Abraham Kiprutto, alongside a dedicated KAA team representing JKIA, Diani Airport, and KAA Head Office during an awards ceremony held in Diani Beach on Friday night.
Meanwhile, Nairobi city scooped Africa’s Leading Business Travel Destination 2024 while Tanzania was crowned as Africa’s Leading Destination.
The World Travel Awards which were established in 1993 reward all key sectors of the travel and hospitality industry that stand out.
Adani deal
The JKIA award comes amid controversy surrounding the proposal by the Kenyan government through the Ministry of Transport to lease the airport to Indian conglomerate Adani Airport Holdings for 30 years to undergo renovation.
Adani through a Public-private partnership (PPP) deal is set to pour Ksh238 billion to upgrade the airport by building a new passenger terminal, refurbishing the existing terminals, constructing a second runway and enhancing cargo handling facilities among other changes.
However, the opaque nature of the details surrounding the Adani-JKIA takeover has caused the public to oppose the agreement, with various court cases filed seeking to prevent the deal.
