Students who sit for their final Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams aspire to take different career paths, with Diploma or Bachelor of Science in nursing being a popular option for many Form Four leavers.

However, many miss out on admission to their desired courses, often because they do not meet the required qualifications for a particular university.

Applicants looking for a course should prioritize understanding the cut-off requirements for each program to increase their chances of securing admission.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing aims to equip nurses with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies needed to excel as clinical practitioners, educators, and researchers.

Graduates are also prepared for mid-level management roles in nursing education and healthcare institutions.

What Bachelor of Science in Nursing Entails

The program trains nurses to provide effective patient care, health education, and leadership in nursing practice, administration, education, research, and publication.

Graduates should be capable of working in diverse healthcare settings, providing care for the sick, and promoting the health of individuals, families, and communities.

But first, you must understand the minimum entry requirements and subject requirements for nursing programs, which are based on cluster subjects.

The first cluster subject is Biology, the second is Chemistry, the third is Mathematics or Physics, and the fourth is English or Kiswahili.

Requirements for This Course

To qualify for a Bachelor of Nursing, one must have a KCSE mean grade of C+ in KCSE.

One can also be a holder of K.A.C.E. with 2 (two) or more Principal passes, one each in Biology and Chemistry or any other qualifications accepted by the University Senate as equivalent to any of the above.

Additionally, an applicant must have a C+ in Chemistry, a C+ in Biology, and at least a C+ in either Physics or Mathematics. Additionally, a C+ is required in either English or Kiswahili.

According to the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) portal, the University of Nairobi (UoN) has the highest cut-off point at 43.676, followed by Kenyatta University at 43.051.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and Maseno University follow closely at 42.95 and 42.529, respectively.

On the lower end, Kenya Highlands Evangelical University has the lowest cut-off point at 25.774, followed by Uzima University at 35.483. Daystar University and Great Lakes University of Kisumu have cut-off points of 36.051 and 36.378, respectively.

Most nursing programs follow a structured academic calendar that may vary depending on the university. Some institutions offer a three-semester system, commonly referred to as a tri-semester system, while others operate on a two-semester or three-term schedule.

This structure determines the duration of study, course load, and progression through the nursing program.
