Machakos County to Dispose of 34 Bodies Dumped in Mortuaries by Police

Machakos County has announced plans to dispose of 46 unclaimed bodies lying at Machakos Level 5 Mortuary and Shalom Community Hospital Mortuary-Athi River from the date of admission awaiting collection.

In a statement on Wednesday, December 18, the County directed interested members of the public to identify the bodies and collect the named bodies within seven days from December 17, 2024, failure to which it will seek authority for disposal.

Machakos County said the announcement is pursuant to the health act cap 242, subsidiary public health (public mortuaries) rule, 1991 (2).

According to the statement, 34 bodies were brought in by the police, while 12 are casualties and those brought in by hospitals.

Unclaimed Bodies at Machakos Level 5 Mortuary

There are 20 bodies lying at the Level 5 Mortuary, 15 brought by the police.

There are two unknown males brought by Tala-Police and Mbiuni-Police on January 11 on May 21, 2024, respectively.

Additionally, Athi River Police brought in unknown baby on June 5 while Kangundo Level 4 brought in an unknown female in July.

The bodies of Josephat Wambua, three unknown males and two unknown foetus delivered by Kyumbi police also remain uncollected.

Other unclaimed bodies include that of Veronica Kanini from Ward 2, unknown male brought on June 30 and unknow foetus from Ward 5.

Unclaimed Bodies at Shalom Community Hospital Mortuary

There are 26 unclaimed bodies at Shalom Community Hospital Mortuary.

Out of this, seven are casualties while the other 19 were brought in by police officers from different stations.

Casualty Cases

The casualty cases include Benjamin Muindi, David Mutua and an unknown body.

They were brought in on October 20, July 10, 2020, and July 23, 2020.

There is also an unknown body brought from Isinya on February 7, 2022, and another one on March 17, 2024.

Bodies of Samuel Burundais brought from Mlolongo on June 6, 2024, and Ephraim Machogo from Athi River on July 30 also remain uncollected.

Athi River Police Cases

An unknown body was brought on October 2, 2020, from Petrocity and two others from Athi River on July 15, 2023, and October 22, 2023.

Other unknown bodies were brought in from Athi River on the following dates this year:  January 18, May 5, June 21, July 11, August 21, September 10th and 15th.

Bodies of Mutinda and Muli were also brought in from Athi River on May 6 and July 13, 2024, respectively.

Mlolongo Police Cases

Three bodies were brought by officers from Mlolongo including that of Jackson Nyasosi on June 23,2023.

The other two were unknown bodies brought on April 17 and December 15, 2023.
