Pastor Wilfred Lai stirred social media with a powerful sermon delivered in the presence of President William Ruto on Sunday, February 23.

During the sermon, Pastor Lai addressed issues such as corruption and other national concerns. President Ruto was accompanied by several local Mombasa leaders, including Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir.

The congregation erupted in cheers when Pastor Lai boldly condemned corruption, declaring that those who steal from Kenyans would face premature death.

“All these people in Kenya who are stealing and destroying our economy—they don’t begin by stealing from Kenya; they begin by stealing from God. And because they steal from God, they can steal from anyone. Nobody expected me to say this, but I have said it. Here, we are not raising robbers; we are raising men and women of integrity who pay their tithe and their taxes,” Lai said.

He also spoke on the recent Gen Z protests, which had led President Ruto to withdraw the controversial Finance Bill—protests the president has described as a dark moment for the country.

However, Pastor Lai expressed support for the protests, saying they were justified as the youth were frustrated with the state of governance in the country.

“When Gen Z took to the streets, they did so because they felt overwhelmed by the level of corruption and couldn’t see a future if things continued that way.

If you want to talk about Gen Z, you should come to JCC and see the real ones. It was simply a hopeless situation, Your Excellency,” said Pastor Lai.

The sermon sparked a wave of reactions on social media.

A social media user by the name of King Chege said, “Today, I salute this man of God. Pastor Wilfred Lai bravely addressed President William Ruto about corruption.”

“Bishop Lai is a true general of faith. He doesn’t dilute or alter his message to suit the desires of the congregation but delivers it with honesty, conviction, and boldness,” wrote Gregori Maheri.
