The MOJA Expressway Company has announced a service downtime affecting the payment of toll fees using mobile money for motorists using the Nairobi Expressway.
In a statement on Monday April 8, MOJA the company managing the expressway, notified motorists that the disruption was due to technicalities from the external mobile money service provider.
“We wish to inform motorists of a temporary system downtime on mobile money affecting payment of toll fees. Updates will be provided as soon as the issue is resolved,” MOJA said.
Motorists are advised to register for the ETC service at any nearest Toll Station or prepare cash in advance while using the MTC lane for their convenience.
“We apologize for the inconvenience caused and are working closely with the external service provider to resolve the issue,” the statement read in parts.
Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen published new toll fees to be paid by motorists using the Nairobi Expressway on January 1, 2024.
Moja Expressway confirmed that the charges would take effect beginning January 1, 2024.
According to the announcement, the revised rates were based on the then exchange rate and adjustments in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
The highest toll fee amount was pushed to Ksh500, up from the previous Ksh360, representing a 38% increase in the changes.
MOJA Company Road Safety
MOJA company issued a statement on April 3 on road safety rules for motorists using the Expressway amid the increased cases of road accidents.
The motorists were directed to always wear a seatbelt, maintain lane discipline and avoid drinking under the influence of alcohol.
Drivers were also advised not to cross the speed limits and give way to emergency vehicles.

Nairobi Expressway Floods
The government and the MOJA company came under huge pressure after heavy rains on March 24 rendered parts of the Nairobi Expressway impassable.
Videos on social media showed motorists being redirected by toll station officers as floodwaters raged down the road.
In the clips, motorists and pedestrians were see maneuvering flooded sections of the flooded road sparking debate on its drainage system.

CNN International Correspondent Larry Madowo posted a video of the expressway stating that the floodwaters had covered the wheels of the vehicle he was travelling in.
In the video, Madowo mentioned that a small car could have easily been swept away by the floods.
“We have been stuck in traffic on the expressway for about an hour to get to this point,” he said.
Apart from the Expressway, Kenyatta and Haile Selassie Avenues were also flooded, sparking debate about the city’s drainage system and its disaster preparedness.Expressway Announces New Increased Charges
