Murang’a County Governor Irungu Kang’ata has clarified the benefits offered under the county’s Kang’ataCare medical cover.
Addressing a report by veteran radio presenter Maina Kageni on Tuesday, Kang’ata dispelled reports that the Ksh10,000 cash programme is aimed to incentivize population increase in the county.

“The aim of the programme is not to increase the population of Muranga,” he said.
In his statement, Kang’ata said the Kang’ataCare insurance cover is designed for vulnerable families and offers three key benefits of Ksh 100,000 for last expenses upon the death of the principal member, Ksh 10,000 as a wedding gift, and Ksh 10,000 as a childbirth gift.

He further clarified that the benefits are exclusively available to registered Kang’ataCare members, emphasizing that not every Murang’a resident holds a Kang’ataCare card.
Irungu Kang’ata Care Benefits
According to Murang’a County government, registered members are entitled to several benefits.

These include comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services, as well as insurance coverage for dental and optical care.
Furthermore, members are entitled to up to Ksh 500,000 to cover expenses in the event of receiving treatment abroad.
Additional Benefits
In the event of the principal member’s death, Kang’ataCare provides Ksh 25,000 to support the secondary school education of their children.
At the same time, couples stand a chance of receiving a marriage gift of Ksh 10,000 for a certified principal member, as well as a Ksh 10,000 childbirth gift for a principal member.

About Kang’ataCare
The County Government of Murang’a signed a memorandum of understanding with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to provide free medical care to 31,416 vulnerable households through the Kang’ataCare programme.
The aim of the Universal Care Programme was for the county government to take proactive measures in ensuring access to healthcare for all citizens.
The Kang’ataCare card covers 40,000 households in the County and offers several benefits.
Currently, covering over 16,000 residents in the county.

Murang’a County on Health Care
Murang’a County has enhanced its healthcare infrastructure by building and upgrading over 20 hospitals, equipping them with state-of-the-art facilities.
In addition, the county has launched 38 telemedicine centres, allowing beneficiaries and residents to access medical care remotely, at no additional cost.
Moreover, the county has raised awareness on the importance of registering for the medical cover, particularly among Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) and elderly individuals with health challenges.
To ensure fair access, Kang’ata established a vetting committee made up of sub-chiefs, area chiefs, nyumba kumi representatives, and church leaders to identify deserving applicants for the cover.
