Kenyatta University (KU) has made an appeal for financial support following the tragic accident that claimed the lives of eleven students.
The students died on the spot after the University bus which they were travelling in was involved in a grisly road accident along the Nairobi – Mombasa Highway.
In a notice on March 23, 2024, the University appealed for financial support for all those who were impacted by the accident.
“Kenyatta University humbly reaches out to you for financial support following the tragic road accident at Maungu, Voi that claimed 11 students and left many casualties.
The tragedy has left our KU community shaken. We earnestly seek your support for all those impacted to help defray medical, funeral and other expenses,” read part of the notice.
The University further extended its appreciation to Kenyans for the prayers, thoughts and compassion following the tragic incident.

How to Contribute
Following the appeal, KU further listed bank account details and an M-PESA Pay Bill number where well-wishers can make their contributions.

The tragic accident which happened on March 18, 2024, at Taita village near Maungu in Taita Taveta County, left 11 dead and 18 other students with injuries.
According to a report from the University, the students were on their way to Mombasa for an academic trip when the unfortunate incident happened.
Kenyatta University responds
Following the tragic accident, KU suspended learning for three days on March 19 in honor of its students who perished in the grisly road accident.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Waceke Wanjohi through an internal memo said the suspension of classes would run from Wednesday, March 20.
“Following this unprecedented tragedy, the University management has decided to suspend all classes for three (3) days from Wednesday 20 March 2024 to allow us to mourn our beloved students,” said Prof. Waceke.

Subsequently, Kenyatta University students on Friday March 22 night mourned the departed colleagues in a candlelight vigil held at KU grounds.
Emotions ran high in the solemn candle-light vigil as students, staff and faculty of the University united in mourning, remembering the lives of the students.
The students while holding the portraits of their departed colleagues illuminated the night with candles.
According to the University leadership, the KU fraternity will on Sunday March 24 hold a memorial service for the 11 students.
