Kenyatta University has suspended learning for three days in honor of its students who perished in a grisly road accident on March 18, 2024, along the Nairobi – Mombasa Highway.
In an internal memo, Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof Waceke Wanjohi said the suspension of classes will run from Wednesday, March 20.
“Following this unprecedented tragedy, the University management has decided to suspend all classes for three (3) days from Wednesday 20 March 2024 to allow us to mourn our beloved students,” said Prof. Waceke.
Earlier, Vice-Chancellor (VC), Paul Wainaina had said that some of the injured students would be evacuated to Nairobi for treatment after an assessment of their status.
Prof Wainana also confirmed that a team from the University’s main campus and Mombasa Campus had been sent to the accident scene last night.
The team, according to the Professor, included two doctors, medical personnel, university security officers, staff and students’ wellness officers who will help to assess the status of the students.
“Some of the injured students are in the process of assessments for possible evacuation to Nairobi depending on their status,” the statement read in part.
The team will evaluate the situation, offer aid to the survivors and compile an accurate accident report.
In response to the tragic incident, the university has also set up a help desk at the Business Student Services Centre (BSSC) Room 151.

Kenyatta University to Give Further Updates of the Incident
The university has given assurances that a comprehensive update will be issued later today as more information unfolds.
According to him, the University was yet to establish the exact number of fatalities or injured persons from the Monday evening accident.
“At the moment we are not able to share specific numbers and/or names but can confirm that there are several fatalities involved,” shared the VC.
The University will provide a more comprehensive report later today as information becomes available. Kenyatta University is deeply saddened by the tragic accident.”

The VC has also expressed sympathy to the families of the students who lost their lives in the tragic incident.
“On behalf of the university council and the University Management board, I wish to convey our deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,” read the message.

At least 11 Kenyatta University Students were killed in the grisly road accident involving their bus and a trailer in the Maungu area near Voi along Nairobi- Mombasa highway.
42 other students sustained serious injuries and are currently admitted in various hospitals where the University VC visited them on Tuesday morning.
According to reports, 4 other students had slight wounds. The bus was ferrying students heading to Mombasa for an academic trip.
