Former Nation Media Photojournalist Nicholas Rukenya has made a Ksh3 million medical appeal for an urgent hip replacement surgery.
A video shared by Nation Journalist James Smart explained that Rukenya has been ill for a period of time and was not able to go about his normal duties.
He is shown in the video barely able to walk with crutches
Friends and family of the journalist have requested for financial aid to help get him the medical attention that he requires.
“Nick Rukenya walked the length and breadth of Kenya talking to young Kenyans, getting their voices heard through the Young Nation Colum of the Sunday Nation.
“Today, he can hardly walk. He urgently requires hip replacement surgery at a cost of about Ksh3 million or USD23,000. We seek your support to help put Nick back on his feet,” the video recording indicated.

His Career After Leaving Nation
Rukenya worked at Nation for 12 years between May 1993 to March 2006, publishing images through the Young Nation Colum of the Sunday Nation.
When he left nation in 2006, he joined Oakland Media Services as the head of Photography. While at Oakland, he was in charge of generating picture ideas for illustrating stories and executing them to perfection.
Also, he was tasked with taking photos of Cover models and cover pictures for the company’s Magazines. He worked there until July 2007.
In April 2013, Rukenya joined Ginger Ink Film Production as a Location Unit Manager.
There, he was tasked with the makers of Nairobi Half Life, an award-winning Kenyan film. However, in June 2013, he left the organization to continue his photography venture as an independent photographer.
As a self-employed photojournalist, Rukenya has been focusing his work on travel photography, landscapes, portraiture and events.

Ex-Citizen TV Journalist Appeals for Help
In a separate incident in September 2023, Former Citizen TV presenter Kimani Mbugua appealed for help from well-wishers in his quest to have a fresh start in his career.
The journalist revealed that he was battling drug addiction explaining that he has managed to keep clean over a long period and was ready to get back on his feet.
Also, he made a video narrating how his life fell apart since 2020 when he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Further, he revealed that he was discharged from the hospital one week prior but was forced to seek shelter from well-wishers as he did not have his own place to go to.
