The family of Martin Mugambi, a form 2 student from Makueni County, is demanding answers after he was found dead in a swimming pool at Miangeni International School.
Martin’s family is calling for a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding his death and to establish whether it was an accident or foul play.
Pathologists have confirmed that the cause of death was drowning, but they are unable to determine whether it was accidental, suicidal, or homicidal.
“We unanimously agree that the cause of death is drowning. However, as pathologists, we cannot ascertain whether it was an accident, suicide, or homicide,” one of the pathologists stated.
Pathologists Reveal Cause of Martin Mugambi death
Another pathologist indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine if the student had consumed any substances that may have contributed to his drowning.
“We, as pathologists, are accustomed to cases where people drown after consuming alcohol. However, we do not expect such incidents in a school setting. Nevertheless, it is always important to check for any substances that may have been in the student’s system. That is what we are currently investigating,” another pathologist explained.

Martin’s family has dismissed the school’s claim that he had been struggling with depression. They have also raised concerns over the school’s refusal to provide CCTV footage, which they believe could shed light on his final moments.
“Our question is: what happened before the drowning? It is evident that the school management denied us access to the CCTV footage from the very beginning. That’s where the issue lies,” a family member stated.

Martin’s lifeless body was discovered in the pool on Monday, February 10, 2025.
The incident has raised concerns about student safety under school administration.
This case mirrors a similar tragedy that occurred in February 2024, when an 11-year-old boy, Elias Abdikarim Ali Mohamud, drowned in a swimming pool at Visa Oshwal Primary School in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area.

According to Elias’s family, he was reported missing on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, and despite extensive search efforts, his body was only discovered the following morning inside the school’s swimming pool. The circumstances of his death remain unclear, prompting his family to demand justice.
