Safaricom PLC has announced a temporary shutdown of the mobile money service, M-Pesa, for scheduled system maintenance.
According to a notice issued on Saturday, April 5, the maintenance will take place on the night of Monday, 7th April 2025.
Further, Safaricom noted that the downtime will occur from 1:00 AM to 1:30 AM, giving the telecommunication service a 30-minute window for maintenance services.
Consequently, during this 30-minute maintenance window, M-Pesa services will be available intermittently, affecting transactions such as sending or receiving money, paying for goods and services, and accessing M-Pesa-related account details.
“To meet our promise to always offer reliable, safe, secure and a superior customer experience, we will be conducting a scheduled system maintenance on the night of Monday 7th April 2025 starting from 01.00AM to 1.30AM,” stated Safaricom.

Will Other Safaricom Services be Interrupted?
Safaricom has explained that the scheduled downtime is part of Safaricom’s ongoing commitment to improving its infrastructure and ensuring a reliable, safe, and secure experience for users.
The company has carefully selected the timing of the maintenance to minimize disruption to customers.
However, all other Safaricom services, including calls, data, and SMS, will continue uninterrupted.
The company has also expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the maintenance and thanked its customers for their understanding and continued trust.
“We are continuously innovating and enhancing our services to connect our customers with endless possibilities,” Safaricom stated in the notice.
Customers are advised to plan ahead for the brief service interruption and take necessary precautions, such as completing any urgent transactions before the scheduled downtime.
“We apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank you for choosing us as your trusted service provider,” added Safaricom.

Earlier Service Interruptions
The Communication Authority of Kenya in March noted that M-PESA recorded its fifth consecutive quarterly decline, with its market share dropping by 2.3 percentage points to 91% in Q4 2024.
However, Airtel Money increased its share from 7.6% to 8.9%, over the same period.
