On January 23, President William Ruto nominated Ida Odinga, widow of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Her nomination has been forwarded to the National Assembly for consideration and approval by Parliament, in line with constitutional requirements governing State appointments to the Foreign Service.
If approved, she will replace former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, who has been serving the UNEP role since January 2025.

Privileges and Salaries
Ida Odinga would typically enjoy several diplomatic privileges.
These include full diplomatic immunity from arrest and detention in the course of official duties under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
She would also be entitled to visa-free or expedited visa access to many countries, as well as tax exemptions on official remuneration.
In addition, the position comes with the use of an official ambassadorial residence, an official vehicle bearing diplomatic (CD) plates, and access to a chauffeur and security support to facilitate the performance of her duties.
According to a report quoted by Business daily, it places the annual income for ambassadors broadly between about Ksh1.8 million and Ksh4.8 million, depending on position and allowances.
