Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti threatened to fire county employees after facing a heated session with the Senate Public Accounts Committee.

Appearing before the committee on Tuesday, October 29, Wavinya was asked to take her oath publicly but ended up reading her own oath.

The governor was forced to re-take the oath after she had read it wrongly by inserting the word “nothing else” instead of “nothing “alone.

“Governor, which oath did you read? Are you reading an oath in your mind or the oath that is presented to you? I don’t think else (the word) appears,” Committee chair and Homa Bay Senator Mose Kajwang posed.

The session grew tense when Senator Kajwang’ questioned Wandeti on who was responsible for conducting legal audits in the county.

Wavinya explained that a task force had prepared a report recommending negotiations on pending bills, focusing on those deemed legitimate for taxation and settlement. She noted that a committee, led by her solicitor and county attorney, had already begun paying validated bills.

“We had a taskforce that came up with the report we came here and the taskforce report part of it was to say that we should try to negotiate with them and go on taxation on the bills that were okay,” Wavinya said.

“With those ones, we said we go for taxation and my solicitor and County Attorney General is here. I formed a small committee that was supposed to start working with the solicitor on taxation. The ones that were okay we already started paying them.”

Wavinya Ndeti Threatens to Fire Employees

Senator Kajwang reminded Wavinya of their last meeting on October 12 that is almost a year ago and asked, “Where would you put the percentage of resolution progress?”

In response, Wavinya turned to her attorney, asking quietly, “What percentage?” seeming unsure.

Kajwang advised her on the importance of having complete documentation ready for committee inquiries.

Wavinya who appeared frustrated, turned to the county attorney and, speaking in Kamba, warned, “I am going to fire all of you.”

The attorney responded stating that the percentage stood at 30. However, the session revealed that Ksh 737 million of the county’s pending bills were tied to legal fees. ”

“30% means what because in this report, Ksh 737 million of your pending bills relate to legal fees, so when you say 30 percent is it payment or verification?” Kajwang’ posed.

Wavinya appeared before the Senate Public Accounts Committee for the interrogation on the report of the Auditor General for the financial year 2022/2023.

In July 2023, Governor Wavinya Ndeti announced that she received reports from four of the five task forces she appointed last year to address various county affairs.

The task forces focused on the Human Resources Audit, Pending Bills Audit, Motor Vehicles Audit, and ICT Infrastructure Audit.
