Women Parliamentary Association Addresses Pastor Ng’ang’a’s Sexist Remarks

The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has condemned controversial preacher, Pastor Ng’ang’a’s derogatory and misogynistic remarks on women.

In a statement released on January 20, 2025, the association condemned the pastor for trivializing rape, terming it unacceptable and harmful. It called for accountability in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

“KEWOPA condemns in the strongest terms the recent remarks by Pastor Ng’ang’a trivializing rape and demeaning women. Such statements are not only harmful and insensitive but also undermine the ongoing fight against GBV and its devastating impact on survivors and their families,” read the statement in part.

Pastor Ngang’s derogatory remarks

The association stated that the preacher’s insensitive remarks invalidate the pain of the survivors and facilitate stereotypes that justify GBV in the community.

“Rape is not a subject for jest or mockery. It is a heinous crime that leaves survivors with lifelong emotional, psychological, and physical scars. Such reckless and insensitive statements not only undermine the pain of survivors but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes that normalize GBV in our communities,” read another part of the statement.

KEWOPA demands an apology

KEWOPA stated that religious leaders have a pivotal role in shaping the opinions and values in society. It therefore called upon religious leaders to lead by example.

“We must also recognize the critical role that faith-based institutions and their leaders. play in shaping societal values and attitudes. It is imperative that religious leaders lead by example, fostering messages of love, respect, and the protection of all, particularly the vulnerable in society,” read the statement.

KEWOPA now demands an apology from the preacher to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence victims and to all women. It also called upon other leaders and religious institutions to join in the fight against GBV by promoting awareness, supporting survivors, and holding perpetrators accountable.
