Defense Minister Israel Katz has stated that the 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, which began at midnight, is temporary.
In a statement on April 17, Katz said Israeli forces “hold and will continue to hold” areas they have cleared and captured, adding that military actions inside Lebanon are ongoing despite the pause in fighting.
He added that the ground offensive and airstrikes against Hezbollah have delivered significant results but are not yet complete.
“We are in the middle of a war against Hezbollah, with a temporary freeze and a 10-day ceasefire,” he said.
He further stated that Israel remains committed to its objective of dismantling Hezbollah’s military capabilities through military or diplomatic means.

Katz also pointed to what he described as growing international diplomatic pressure, including US involvement, aimed at advancing Israel’s goals and influencing the Lebanese government.
He further claimed that more than 1,700 Hezbollah fighters had been killed and said Israeli forces had cleared a buffer zone along the border, removing operatives and residents.
He argued that efforts would continue to eliminate what he described as militant infrastructure in border villages used as operational bases.
Katz said that if hostilities resume, any residents who return to the security zone would be required to evacuate to allow military operations to proceed.

Earlier, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) pledged to maintain operations against Hezbollah, noting that it will not compromise on northern security.
On April 8, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, Chief of the General Staff, said the army will continue to target the group, utilizing every opportunity to strike.
“We will continue striking the Hezbollah terror organization and will utilize every operational opportunity. We will not compromise the security of the residents of northern Israel. We will continue to strike with determination,” Eyal Zamir said.
