President William Ruto has announced a major infrastructure overhaul for Nairobi City County, in a move designed to deliver several developments in Nairobi following engagement with the Nairobi County Assembly, where an agreement was reached on plans to rework the city.
Speaking in a church service at the Karen Africa Gospel Church (AGC) on April 19, Ruto said discussions with the county leadership led to alignment on infrastructure improvement priorities to transform Nairobi’s urban environment.
“There are many developments taking place in Nairobi following discussions with the County Assembly, where agreement was reached on plans to rework the city,” Ruto said.

He outlined a series of planned infrastructure and service delivery improvements for the city.

In his speech, Ruto announced that the dualling of a major road had already been designed and would soon be advertised for implementation as part of broader road expansion works.

The government has decided to strengthen Nairobi’s role in projecting Kenya’s national image, noting that impressions formed in the capital influence perceptions of the country,” he said.
He stated that about 250 kilometers of roads across the city had been mapped for upgrading, with 67 kilometers already under construction and a further 70 kilometers set to begin shortly.
Citywide Street Lighting, Waste Collection Expansion, and Urban Clean-Up Program
Further in his statement, Ruto announced a citywide street-lighting program to install 40,000 lights to improve visibility and support a 24-hour city model.
“A citywide lighting program will be rolled out, involving the installation of 40,000 streetlights across Nairobi to improve visibility and support a 24-hour city model,” he announced.
In his explanation, he said the lighting project will cover major highways, estates, and other areas, in coordination with the Nairobi County Government.

On sanitation, he said garbage collection operations were being scaled up, with the number of waste collection trucks increasing from about 40 to 250 to improve efficiency and coverage.

He added that the projects are being implemented in coordination with the County Government and will include public feedback during rollout.
Ruto said the combined infrastructure, lighting, and sanitation programs are expected to significantly improve Nairobi’s urban environment within the year.
