Angry Kiminini residents on Wednesday night torched a campaign vehicle belonging to the current area MP Chris Wamalwa.
The vehicle had knocked down a man and a woman along the Kitale highway
The woman died while the man was badly injured.
Confirming the incident Kiminini sub-county police commander John Onditi said the accident occurred at around 7:30pm.
Onditi said the vehicle was being driven at a higher speed when it hit a woman who was roasting maize by the roadside.
The woman died on spot while Her child, who was in her company, sustained injuries and is being treated at Kiminini Cottage Hospital.
Wamalwa, who is eyeing the Trans Nzoia governor’s seat, confirmed the vehicle involved in the accident belonged to him.
The MP sent out his condolences to the family of the deceased and the injured.
“My condolences to the family and friends of the late Florence Apondi, who died following a grisly road accident, involving one of my campaign vehicles,” he said in a statement on Facebook.
The angry residents barricaded the busy Kiminini- Kitale highway and lit bonfires in protest of the tragic incident.
All four occupants of the Nissan vehicle managed to escape from the scene after the mob attacked them.
Police officers who rushed to the scene managed to rescue the driver of the vehicle from the angry mob
The driver sustained serious injuries and who rushed to the hospital .
The body of the deceased was taken to Kitale County referral mortuary awaiting an autopsy.
