Assistant Inspector General of police in charge of reforms at the National Police Service (NPS) David Birech has been named Internal Affairs Unit Director.
Birech will succeed the Director of Criminal Investigation Mohamed Amin.
Moreover, the new director took over at IAU on Wednesday December 6 at a brief ceremony at the KCB center in Upper hill.
Likewise, a memo sent from IAU acting director Esther Ng’ang’a to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority said Birech had taken over.
“We are pleased to write and bring to your attention that Mr. David Birch, MBS psc'(R), Assistant Inspector General of Police has succeeded Mr. Mohamed I. Amin as the Director Internal Affairs Unit.”
“His appointment was communicated to the Unit by Inspector General of National Police Service on 2nd December 2022. Prior to his appointment in the current position, he was the NPS Director of reforms at Jogoo House,” read the memo.
The memo also noted that Birech is ready to partner with IPOA to fulfill the IAU statutory.

Birech who has also worked as Staff Officer training at Vigilance, is a seasoned officer with experience in investigations and reforms.
Nonetheless, the IAU has also received ten new seasoned investigators from DCI. The investigators were identified and recruited last year.
However, due to logistical issues, they remained at the DCI until recently when they reported to strengthen investigations department.
Some of the functions assigned to the unit include
- Receiving and investigating complaints against police
- Promoting uniform standards of discipline and good order in the service
- Keeping record of facts of any complaints or investigations made to it
- Investigate and recommend appropriate action in respect of anyone found engaging in any unlawful conduct without prejudice
