The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has gazetted names and symbols of 38 independent candidates seeking to run for the presidency in the August polls
Familiar names among the list are Three-time presidential candidate Nazlin Umar and gospel singer Reuben Kigame as well as Nick Kukubo who vied the in last two presidential elections.
The fate of the 38 now lies with IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, who is the Returning Officer for the presidential election, who will scrutinize them before either clearing them or rejecting their applications.
“IEBC gives notice to the public that the persons listed… have submitted their symbols and expressed intention to contest as independent candidates for the General Election to be held on 9th August 2022 and are required to present themselves to the respective Returning Officer,” Chebukati said in a gazette notice published on Friday but which was circulated on Wednesday .
