Kakamega ANC gubernatorial candidate Cleophas Malala has supported the move by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to suspend the governor’s election in the county.
Malala says that reasons given by IEBC chairperson for the postponement are valid
“This evening, following the press release by the IEBC Chairperson, I am deeply saddened by the murder and systematic harassment meted on IEBC staff by a section of persons who want to grab power through the back door,” Malala said.
He called on his supporters to remain calm until a new for the gubernatorial election is set.
“As brand Cleo Malalah, we understand the current predicament of the commission. We fully stand with IEBC and urge our supporters to remain calm as we await the gazettement of a new election date. We are ready to face our competitors on the ballot on a date the commission,” he added.
On Wednesday, Chebukati suspended elections in Kakamega and Mombasa counties for the second time.
The elections had been salted for August 23rd 2022
Chebukati cited continued harassment of the commission’s staff as the main reason for the postponement of by-elections in the said counties.
“In view of the prevailing circumstances, the Commission has postponed the by-elections slated for 23rd August 2022, to a date to be announced through a gazette notice for the following positions, gubernatorial positions in Kakamega and Mombasa” Chebukati said in the statement.
“This has instilled fear within the staff, who are now unable to report to the office for duty. This harassment must stop forthwith,” he added.
