A medical student has been arrested in Kayole, Nairobi for faking his kidnapping and conning his parents.
Reports by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) state that, the medical student identified as Edwin Kamau ‘disappeared’ Sunday, July 3 before blocking his father and calling his mother claiming to have been kidnapped.
“He told her that his kidnappers wanted a ransom of Sh70,000, to set him free before he hanged up on her,” the DCI stated.
Moreover, the DCI added that, after his parents reported the issue to the police, the officers launched a man hunt for the kidnappers.
However, investigations pointed out that according to the calls Kamau made to his mother, he persisted that his kidnappers were on the verge of killing him.
To ensure their son’s security, his parents sent Ksh. 10,000 on Thursday, July 7 via mobile money and an additional KSh. 40,000 today.
Nonetheless, after Kamau received the first KSh. 10,000, he went to a club in Thika to drink and make merry in the company of a woman he had met.
The alleged woman spiked his drink with an unknown substance and stole his money. The DCI further noted that it was after regaining consciousness that Kamau called his parents who then sent the last Sh40,000 which he withdrew.
Furthermore, by this time, detectives had closed in on him.
“Upon questioning, Kamau said that he had squandered money meant for his last semester’s school fees and was wondering how he would raise money in order to sit for his exams, hence the fake story.”
