The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the shooting of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif.
On Monday October 24, the IPOA Chairperson, Ann Makori said the authority had deployed a team to investigate deeper and produce facts on what transpired in Kajiado County on the night of Sunday October 23.
“There was alleged police killing of a Pakistani national at Tinga market, Kajiado County, last evening and our rapid response team has already been dispatched. His name is Arshad Sharif, aged 50, and the incident happened on October 23 at 2200hrs,” said Makori.
The police report recorded at Magadi police station stated that, the slain journalist, Arshad Sharif was being driven by his brother, Mr Kurram Ahmed, on their way from Kwenia in Magadi, an area known for conservation of the endangered Rüppell’s vulture.
The IPOA Chairperson further assured Kenyans that the authority would investigate the unexplained fatal killings involving the police in recent records.
“There are other alleged fatal shootings of police to the members of the public, to their colleagues due to personal issues and so IPOA assures Kenyans of full commitment to deliver on its mandate and consequently contribute towards professionalism of the National Police Service through tenacious efforts to eradicate all forms of extrajudicial and enforced disappearances,” Makori added.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) was established through an Act of Parliament published in November 2011 to provide for civilian oversight over the work of the police in Kenya.
