President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is set for a clash with Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in the upcoming by-elections, after announcing nomination dates that include hotly contested political seats such as Kasipul and Magarini constituencies.
The move came weeks after ODM national chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga declared Kasipul “an ODM zone,” insisting the party would defend the seat vigorously.
Despite her remarks, UDA, in its latest announcement of nomination dates, confirmed it will field a candidate in the constituency.
The Kasipul seat became vacant following the death of Charles Ong’ondo Were. The vacancy has attracted several aspirants within the ODM party, including Were’s son, Boyd Were, and Philip Aroko.
UDA is also eyeing the seat, with President William Ruto keen to test his popularity in Luo Nyanza ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Ruto and Raila to Show Their Political Might in Upcoming By-Elections
Another constituency expected to witness a political showdown between UDA and ODM is Magarini, where an ODM MP’s 2022 election victory was nullified by the Supreme Court.
The court upheld earlier High Court and Court of Appeal decisions declaring that Magarini MP Harrison Garama Kombe’s August 2022 election was invalid, citing “massive irregularities” that undermined the credibility of the vote.

Kombe had narrowly defeated his opponent by just 45 votes. Both UDA and ODM are expected to mount aggressive campaigns in Magarini, setting the stage for another high-profile contest.
