The three-time Olympic champion, Kenenisa Bekele from Ethiopia, has withdrawn from the Virgin Money London Marathon after an injury during his training.
Bekele was expected to go head to head with Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge at the top-leading race on Sunday, October 4th.
He is saddened that he will not participate in one of the most anticipating races in the world.
Bekele Calf Injury
Bekele suffered from a calf injury.
“This race was so important to me. My time in Berlin last year gave me great confidence and motivation, and I was looking forward to showing that again, I have worked so hard for it,” said Bekele.
The Ethiopian missed Kipchoge’s world record by two seconds when he won in Berlin in 2019 in two hours 1 minute 41 seconds.
“I realize many people around the world have been looking forward to this race, and I am sorry to disappoint my fans, the organizers, and my fellow competitors,” he said in a statement.
