EPL Stars Set to Shine at AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast

AFCON is set to kick off in Ivory Coast on January 13th, 2024

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, rescheduled to January and February 2024 in Ivory Coast, is poised to welcome top Premier League talents, including Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Manchester United’s Andre Onana, and Westham’s Mohammed Kudus.

The tournament’s delay arose from concerns regarding weather conditions affecting the players welfare.

Mohammed Salah a Liverpool star who captained his home team (Egypt) up to the finals where they lost to a 4-2 penalty shoutout defeat to Senegal will once again be an attraction to watch.

Likewise, Andre Onana who plays as goalkeeper for Manchester United and the Cameroon home team has made 30 appearances the team.

He has also made competitive debut through his saves and as such will be an eye to many.

Furthermore, Mohammed Kudus of Ghana a livewire for Westham United has set one of the best leagues in the world.

His explosive speed, skill and goal- scoring prowess adds him to the list of key players for Ghana in pursuit of the title.

Stars Not in the English Premier League

Also in line, is Victor Osimhen (Nigeria) best African Player of the year who plays as a striker for Serie A club Napoli.

Victor is among the notable players featured in the competition.

Sadio Mane (Senegal) Forward Winger for Al Nassr who is also the best player of the previous editions, Lions of Teranga star player will also be the man to watch as he aims to defend their title amid a competitive field featuring powerhouse nations like Nigeria, Egypt, and Ghana.

To add on, the event’s star-studded roster will also include Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, Vincent Aboubakar (Cameroon), Peter Shalulile (Namibia), and Mohammed Amoura (Algeria).

Kick Off Dates for AFCON and Teams Participating

The continental showpiece will kick off on Saturday, 13, January 2024 and end on 11, February 2024.

With 24 teams vying for AFCON glory, the tournament will initiate with the host nation Ivory Coast locking horns with Guinea-Bissau.

Moreover, the competition structure will encompass six groups (A-F) with the top two teams advancing directly to the Round of 16 commencing on January 27.

Joining them will be the four best-ranked third-placed teams, determined by head-to-head results and goal differences.

Dilemma in English Premier League Clubs

However, the tournament’s timing poses a dilemma for Premier League clubs as players reaching the semifinals could potentially miss over a month of club football, impacting team strategies and match schedules.

The absence of key stars during this period might influence the league’s dynamics and the clubs’ performance trajectory.

AFCON 2023 Fixtures

Nevertheless, the stage is set for the thrilling commencement of the Africa Cup of Nations 2024, where 24 nations will battle for continental glory in Ivory Coast.

The tournament’s groups and fixtures have been unveiled, promising an exciting month of football action.

In addition, after the tournament beginning with Ivory Coast facing Guinea-Bissau in Group A at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan on Saturday, Group B will follow starting with a clash between Egypt and Mozambique, followed by Ghana taking on Cape Verde.

Both matches are scheduled in Abidjan’s Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium on Sunday, January 14.

Further, group stages will be spread across multiple cities in Ivory Coast, showcasing top talent and competitive matchups as teams will be vying for a spot in the last 16.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage.

Quarter Finals and Semi-finals

Also, as the tournament will be progressing, the excitement will amplify with intense matches leading up to the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and the ultimate showdown on February 11 at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.

Club managers in the English topflight are bracing themselves for tactical adjustments and potential player absences, navigating through a challenging period due to the absence of some key stars that will be participating in the biennial African football extravaganza.
