The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning of moderate to heavy rains, strong winds, and large ocean waves across several parts of the country, lasting until May 1, 2026.

In the advisory issued on April 24, the department said rainfall exceeding 20 millimeters in 24 hours is expected in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, as well as parts of Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya.

The weatherman warned that the heaviest rainfall is likely between Sunday, April 26, and Tuesday, April 28, while the Coast is expected to continue receiving heavy rains through April 27.

The department also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots over the Coast, Southeastern Lowlands, and parts of northern Kenya, with ocean waves expected to rise above two metres in coastal waters.

“Peak rainfall expected: 26th – 28th April 2026. The Coast is likely to experience heavy rainfall up to 27th April 2026. Strong Winds: Southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (≈12.8 m/s). Ocean Conditions: Wave heights >2 meters expected in coastal waters,” read part of the advisory.

KMD Lists Counties to be Affected

Areas expected to be affected include Turkana and Samburu in northwestern Kenya; counties in the Western region and Lake Victoria Basin such as Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, and Narok.

The advisory also covers the Central Highlands, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi, and Meru, as well as Kajiado in the Southeastern Lowlands.

Along the Coast, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, and Lamu are expected to be affected, as is Garissa in the Northeastern region. Parts of Marsabit, Isiolo, Wajir, Mandera, Taita-Taveta, Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni are also likely to experience the forecast conditions.

Weatherman Warns of Flood-Risks

The department warned that the expected weather conditions could trigger flooding and flash floods, as well as poor visibility and rising river levels, even in areas that may not receive heavy rainfall.

KMD also cautioned about possible landslides in hilly regions such as the Aberdare ranges and Mt Kenya, as well as hazardous marine conditions along the coast.

Residents have been advised to avoid walking or driving through moving water and to avoid sheltering under trees or near grilled windows during storms due to lightning risks.

They have also been urged to remain cautious in landslide-prone and low-lying areas and to exercise extra caution during maritime activities.

Over 300 Households Affected by Floods

As of April 24, Kenya Red Cross has reported that more than 300 households have been affected by flooding in Lunga Lunga Sub-County, Kwale County, following heavy rains that have disrupted movement and access to key areas.

The weather department said sections of the Likoni–Lunga Lunga Road in Perani, Ramisi and Lunga Lunga have been rendered difficult to pass, slowing transport and emergency access in the region.

It added that response teams are on the ground conducting assessments, raising awareness and working with partners to support affected families as flood response efforts continue.
