A Nairobi bound bus full of passengers caught fire early morning on Monday January 22, 2024, at Kanga area, Makueni County.
Confirming the incident, Eastern Region police commander Joseph Napeiyan noted that the incident happened within Tsavo National Park.
He reported that all 20 passengers in the bus were safe adding that there were no fatalities recorded as a result of the incident.
The accident is reported to have occurred at around 1:00am as the bus was on its way from Mombasa.
Police at the accident scene stated that investigations into the cause of the fire were ongoing.
According to reports, passengers of the ill-fated bus were able to retrieve their luggage before it fully went ablaze.
The bus service company had not yet been revealed to the public by the time this article was published.
Nonetheless, the incident has caused unrest among some Kenyans who expressed concern over the increasing cases of buses catching fire on the road.

Passengers Transferred to Another Bus
After the successful evacuation of the occupants of the burning bus, the police boss stated that arrangements were made for another bus to allow passengers continue with their journey.
“It was reported by other motorists at about 1.00 am that there was a vehicle which was on fire along Nairobi-Mombasa highway at Kanga area within Tsavo National Park,”
“Our officers responded and established that motor vehicle registration; a PSV bus was moving from Mombasa direction headed to Nairobi with 20 passengers on board before it got burnt completely after it caught fire from the rear wheel tyre,” the police boss stated.

A Separate Incident
Earlier in December, a Kisumu bound bus full of passengers, belonging to Ena Coach service bus burst into flames along the Nakuru – Nairobi highway while at Limuru area.
According to reports, the bus caught fire after a loud bang under the driver’s seat. The passengers immediately began scrambling for safety.
The passengers claimed that they panicked when smoke filled the air, forcing some of them to jump out of the bus through the window while it was still moving.
As such, some of the passengers who jumped out suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital.
All 47 passengers travelling in the bus were able to exit the bus as those who sustained injuries were rushed to the hospital.
