White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has unveiled plans for a new national monument, the United States Triumphal Arc, to be built in Washington, DC, as part of celebrations marking 250 years since the founding of the United States (U.S.).
Speaking during a press briefing on April 15, Leavitt said the monument is intended to honor America’s history and the achievements of its people since independence in 1776.
The project is being advanced by President Donald Trump in coordination with the Department of the Interior as part of the nation’s 250th-anniversary commemorations.
According to the plan presented, the United States Triumphal Arc will stand 250 feet tall, with the height directly linked to the 250‑year milestone.
The structure is described as a large ceremonial arch designed to serve as a long‑term national landmark in the capital.
Leavitt described the project as an architectural centerpiece that will recognize the country’s past and preserve its story for future generations.
“This monumental arc will beam at 250 feet tall in honor of 250 years and stand on ground that is currently empty green space in Memorial Circle on Columbia Island, a man‑made island in the Potomac River managed by the National Park Service,” Leavitt stated.
She said the monument is intended to inspire Americans long after the anniversary celebrations conclude.
The White House released an early rendering of the proposed monument alongside the announcement, showing a large freestanding arch in an open setting.
United States Triumphal Arc Location, Design, and Interior Features
Leavitt said the chosen site provides visibility while preserving existing memorial areas in the city.

Any construction on the site would require formal submission of plans and review by federal agencies, including the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service.
According to details shared by the press secretary, the United States Triumphal Arc will be decorated with artwork and visual displays.
These features are planned to depict key moments from American history and highlight achievements by the American people over the past 250 years.
The interior and exterior artwork will focus on themes of national development, civic life, and endurance.
Leavitt said the monument will reflect the growth of the country across generations rather than focus on a single event or figure.
No construction timeline or budget figures were announced during the briefing.
The administration said further details, including engineering plans, costs, and approvals, will be shared as the proposal advances through the required federal processes.
A Symbol for the Future Generations
The White House Press Secretary said the arc is meant to stand as a permanent symbol that children and grandchildren can visit in the future.

She added that the structure is designed to reflect continuity across centuries and to serve as a reminder of the nation’s founding and progress.
The United States Triumphal Arc would become one of the tallest monumental structures in Washington if approved and constructed.
Unlike existing memorials that focus on individual leaders or specific wars, the arc is intended to represent the broader national story.
The announcement comes as federal agencies and cultural institutions prepare events, exhibits, and projects tied to the upcoming 250th anniversary.
The Triumphal Arc is being positioned as a central physical marker of those commemorations.
At this stage, the project remains in the planning phase, with formal proposals pending review.
The administration stated that the monument is intended to stand as a lasting historical marker for the nation’s quarter‑millennium milestone.
