A motorcycle collided head on with a matatu at Tulimani area along the Mwingi-Garissa Highway killing three people.
According to reports, the motorbike collided with a 46-seater matatu at Mbondoni area, few kilometers from Mwingi Town.
Eyewitnesses said the boda boda rider and his passenger were killed on the spot while the other person succumbed to injuries.
“Those who have died were passengers on that motorcycle, and there is one person who has been injured and has been taken to Mwingi Level 4 Hospital,” said the first eyewitness.
The matatu was heading to Mwingi Town from Nairobi, when the accident occurred near a weighbridge close to Mwingi Town.
“There has been an accident near this weighbridge here in Mwingi. A bodaboda rider was hit by a passenger vehicle, and two people have died: the driver and the person who was being carried,” another eyewitness said.
Mwingi Central OCPD Abdulkadir Malicha confirmed the incident stating that the motorbike was coming from Mwingi Town at the time of accident.
The bodies of the diseased have been removed to Mwingi Level 4 Hospital mortuary.
7 Dead in Mwingi Crash
This comes less than a month after seven people were confirmed dead and several others injured following an accident that occurred on July 12 in Mwingi.
Reports indicated that a Mandera bound bus from Nairobi collided with a trailer along the Garissa-Mwingi Road.
The conductor and driver of the bus, belonging to Makkah travels company, were among the individuals reported to have succumbed in the accident.
Moreover, first responders and well-wishers rushed to the scene to help rescue the victims.
Survivors narrated that the bus driver, who was ferrying 50 passengers from Garissa to Nairobi, attempted to overtake an unknown motor vehicle which did not stop, prompting him to get back to his lane. The vehicle veered off its lane and rammed into the near side of a trailer ferrying gypsum.
Further, they said that the trailer had stalled on the road because of a mechanical problem.

NTSA Accident Statistics
Numbers from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) showed that 1,108 Kenyans had died in road accidents between January and April 1, 2024.
NTSA Director General George Njao said speeding and drunk driving were the leading causes of accidents in the country.
According to the statistics, 1,189 fatalities were reported in 2024 compared to 1,129 during the same period the previous year.
Besides, 2,693 had been slightly injured in 2024, a 56% increase on the 1,726 recorded in the first three months of 2023.

Pedestrians lead in the number of fatalities with 436 followed by passengers at 255.However, there has been a decrease in the number of motorcyclists of fatalities from 311 in 2023 to 276 in 2024 over the same period.
The other fatalities are as follows: pillion passengers (102), driver (98) and pedal cyclist (22).
The number of dead drivers and pillion cases decreased from 108 and 105 respectively recorded the previous year.
