Kenya Power has restored all its prepaid payment platforms, allowing customers to resume purchasing electricity tokens after a system interruption disrupted services earlier on Thursday.

In a customer update issued at 3:35 p.m. on July 30, 2026, the utility confirmed that prepaid token purchase services are now operational across its platforms.

However, Kenya Power said the high volume of transactions following the restoration has created a backlog, resulting in delays in the delivery of electricity tokens to some customers.

The company said it is working to clear the backlog as quickly as possible to restore real-time token delivery. Kenya Power also apologized for the inconvenience caused by the service disruption.

“We wish to inform our customers that all our prepaid payment platforms have been restored and customers are now able to buy tokens. However, the high number of transactions is causing delays in the delivery of tokens to customers. We are working to clear the backlog as soon as possible to ensure real time delivery,” the update read.

Kenya Power Confirms Temporary Outage on Prepaid Vending and Bill Payment Systems

Kenya Power had announced a system interruption affecting its prepaid vending and bill payment platforms, temporarily disrupting electricity token purchases and bill payments across all customer channels.

In a customer alert issued at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2026, the utility said customers are currently unable to buy prepaid electricity tokens or make bill payments due to the ongoing system outage.

The disruption affects all payment channels used by Kenya Power customers. The company did not disclose the cause of the interruption or indicate how long the outage is expected to last.

Kenya Power said it is working to resolve the issue and will notify customers once services have been fully restored. The utility also apologized for the inconvenience caused by the temporary disruption.

“Our prepaid vending and bill payment platforms are currently unavailable due to a system interruption affecting token purchases and electricity bill payments across all channels. We will update customers once services are restored. We regret the inconvenience caused,” Kenya Power said.

Frustrations as KPLC Customers Report Token Purchase Errors After Nationwide Blackout

Kenyans reported difficulties purchasing Kenya Power (KPLC) prepaid electricity tokens just after the nationwide power blackout, with many saying their transactions are failing across multiple payment channels.

In a post on X, one user tagged Kenya Power and Safaricom after receiving an M-PESA message stating that payment to KPLC prepaid could not be completed and advising them to try again later.

“Transaction failed, M-PESA cannot complete payment of Ksh200.00 to KPLC PREPAID. Please try again shortly,” read the USSD prompt.

KPLC Customers Report Similar Experiences Across Different Channels

Other users also reported errors on alternative payment channels, including the Kenya Power App, which displayed a system internal error and advised users to select another payment method.

A separate notification informed customers that the KPLC token service was temporarily unavailable and advised them to try again later.

“Your transaction failed. System internal error. Please select another payment method,” the notification advised.

Several users said they encountered the same problem when attempting to purchase KPLC prepaid tokens, with some reporting repeated failed payment attempts.

Others said the issue had persisted since the previous evening, while some indicated they had successfully made payments but were yet to receive their prepaid electricity tokens.

“I bought my tokens last night, but I still haven’t received them,” said Ann Nyambura.

Relief as Kenya Power Restores Electricity Supply Across All Regions

Kenya Power also announced that electricity supply has been fully restored to all regions following the recent outage.

In a customer alert issued on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 6:22 a.m., the utility said power was restored to all affected customers by 2:00 a.m.

Kenya Power thanked customers for their patience and support as technical teams worked overnight to restore electricity services across the affected areas.

“We are pleased to report that power supply was fully restored to all affected customers by 2:00 am today,” KPLC said in its statement.

Kenya Power Confirms Nationwide Power Blackout

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company confirmed a widespread power outage affecting several parts of the country.

In a statement issued at 9:05 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, Kenya Power said the outage had affected customers in Nairobi, the Coast region, Mt. Kenya and parts of the Central Rift.

The utility, however, noted that parts of the North Rift and Western regions remained on electricity supply.

How to Buy and Access KPLC Prepaid Tokens Token History

Customers can buy Kenya Power prepaid electricity tokens through M-Pesa Pay Bill 888880 or the MyPower mobile app.

To buy tokens via M-Pesa, open the M-Pesa menu, select Lipa na M-Pesa, choose Pay Bill, enter 888880 as the business number, input the prepaid meter number as the account number, enter the amount, key in the M-Pesa PIN, and complete the transaction. The token is then sent via SMS.

Customers can also purchase tokens using the MyPower app by downloading it from Google Play or the Apple App Store, registering or signing in, adding a meter or account number, and selecting the Buy Token option.

The MyPower app also enables customers to access prepaid token history, view receipts and statements, check account balances, monitor electricity usage, pay postpaid bills, report power outages, and manage multiple electricity accounts.

Customers who need to retrieve recently purchased tokens can also dial *977#, which provides access to the last three prepaid tokens purchased.
