Stanbic Bank Kenya has announced the appointment of Michael Mutiga as the new Chief Executive Officer, effective August 1, 2026.
In a statement dated July 16 2026, the financial provider stated that the appointment is subject to approval from relevant regulatory authorities.
“The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Michael Mutiga as the Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank Kenya Limited effective 1st August 2026. This appointment is subject to requisite regulatory approvals,” the statement read.
Before his appointment, Abraham Ongenge was serving as Acting Chief Executive Officer since March 1, 2026 before the appointment.
Mutiga served as the Chief Business Development and Strategy Officer at Safaricom Plc.
Mutiga brings more than 20 years of leadership experience spanning banking, telecommunications and digital financial services. His career has focused on areas such as corporate finance, business expansion, strategic planning, stakeholder engagement and managing large-scale operations.
Stanbic Bank Kenya Leadership Transition
Mutiga’s appointment follows interim leadership under Abraham Ongenge, who has served as acting CEO since March 1, 2026.

The Bank’s Board praised Ongenge for his leadership during the period, noting that he ensured continuity of the Bank’s operations and that he will return to his role as Head of Private and Personal Banking.
“The Board extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Abraham Ongenge for his exemplary leadership and dedicated service as Acting Chief Executive since 1st March 2026. During this period, he has provided steady leadership and strategic direction, ensuring continuity in Stanbic Bank’s operations and advancing key business priorities. The Board is grateful for his significant contribution and commitment to the Company’s success. Mr. Ongenge will continue to play a pivotal role in the Company’s growth and transformation agenda in his substantive role as Head of Private & Personal Banking,” the statement read.
Michael Mutiga Academic Background and Career Background
Michael Mutiga began his academic journey at the University of Nairobi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from 1996, graduating with Honours in 1999.
In September 2001, he advanced his education at Temple University’s James E. Beasley School of Law in the United States, where he pursued a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Law and graduated in May 2003.
Mutiga is also a certified Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a Certified Public Secretary (CPS).

Michael Mutiga brings more than two decades of leadership experience across banking, telecommunications and digital financial services.
Before joining Stanbic Bank Kenya, Mutiga served as the Chief Business Development and Strategy Officer at Safaricom Plc from May 2022.
Before his move to telecommunications, Mutiga spent more than 15 years at Citigroup (Citi), where he held several senior leadership positions across corporate banking and finance.
During his time at Citi, he rose to become Managing Director and Head of Corporate Finance for Sub-Saharan Africa, based in Johannesburg.
Mutiga’s banking career also includes experience at Barclays Bank, where he served as Regional Coverage Head for Investment Banking in East Africa from 2002 to 2006.
