A student has been hospitalized after being struck by lightning in Nambale, Busia County.
According to a witness, the student, who is recuperating at the moment was in class when the incident happened.
“The victim was attending classes before lightning struck. No other injuries were reported,” witnesses said.
The student, who is from Katira Secondary School in Nambale Constituency received treatment from the Kocholia Sub County hospital in Teso North Constituency.
Health workers attending to the patient said he is in stable condition and noted the fatality rates of lightning strikes are high.
A lightning strike tragedy was experienced in Kenya in 1987, where 23 were reported dead and 50 injured.
“As scientists, it is easy to explain what happens in western Kenya,” What is not easy to know is what you can do about it.” said Alexander L. Alusa, an American-trained cloud physicist and former director of the meteorological department of the Kenyan government at the time.
