A student in Nandi County committed suicide in a police cell after he was arrested for threatening to kill one of his family members.
Meshack Kiprop who hails from Ndubeti village was found hanging on the window cells at the Kilibwoni Police Post. He is said to have used a piece of cloth to hang himself.
Family Feud
Nandi County Deputy Police Commander David Kirui revealed that Kiprop had threatened to kill his sister Mercy Chebet.
“There was a commotion and screams from the police cell only for the student to be found to have committed suicide,” explained Kirui.
Drug Addict
Residents of Kilibwoni claimed that the 19-year-old is suspected to be a drug addict. The body of the student was transferred to the Kapsabet County Referral Hospital mortuary with an autopsy to be conducted later. Police stated that they will investigate to know what happened.

The World Health Organization estimates that 78% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.
Furthermore, it is also the second leading cause of death among 15-29 years old globally. In Kenya, 1,442persons were reported to have committed the crime of attempted suicide between 2015 and 2018.
The Kenya National Police Service annual crime reports reveal the figures for the crime of attempted suicide is higher coming second to murder in the homicide category.
