Employees have broken out of China’s largest iPhone assembly factory after a covid 19 outbreak forced a lockdown at the premises.
It has not been confirmed how many cases of Covid have been identified at the factory but about ten people were witnessed jumping a fence outside the plant, owned by manufacturer Foxconn, in the central city of Zhengzhou.
The capital of China’s Henan province reported 167 locally transmitted infections, as people continue to clash with President Xi Jinping’s rigid zero-Covid policy.
According to statements from the factory workers, the area surrounding the plant had been locked down for days, with Covid-positive workers being subjected to daily testing and quarantines to try to contain the outbreak.
Foxconn announced it was banning all dine-in catering at the Zhengzhou plant and required workers to eat meals in their rooms.
The company told reporters it was maintaining “normal production” as the plant heightened production of the latest iPhone 14 models.
