Former Chief Justice (CJ) and Presidential aspirant David Maraga has revealed that he will not return to Kisii and Nyamira to campaign for votes.
In an interview on Sunday, August 24, Maraga stated that certain individuals have been telling him to seek support from his two home counties.
Maraga noted that the political base is a game of numbers, but that will not push him to fall for ethnic politics.
Some people are saying, look, I should go to Kisii and Nyamira and get the support of those people. That’s one of the things that I’m going to fight. This ethnic balkanization is what is creating huge problems.
He said elections in Kenya are based on ethnicity, leaving out key issues like competence, leadership qualities, and development agenda.
Maraga said the voters just want to elect their own, allowing the incompetent people to take over the government.
Kisii & Nyamira Votes Not Enough to Win
He stated that Kenya will be his political base, and he will not narrow down to specific counties.
Maraga emphasised that he will appeal to all Kenyans to elect him as President in 2027.
He explained that votes from the two counties alone cannot make him President, hence his decision to focus on the whole country.
At the end of the day, you end up with people who are not capable of running the country. My political base is Kenya. I am going to appeal to Kenyans to elect me president, If I’m elected, I come from the Kisii community. The Kisii community alone can’t elect me to the presidency. I will need the support of the entire country.

Maraga Asks Kenyans to Reject Tribal Politics
Maraga said Kenyans are ready to shift from ethnic elections to issue-based politics.
The former CJ said he has spoken to several professionals, and they are tired of ethnic elections.
“They are tired of this ethnic balkanization. They want a system that runs and serves everyone. Because, I mean, if you have your tribesman who is going to mind about stealing and enabling those around him to steal, the rest of the ethnic community remains where they are. In fact, they get into worse positions,” Maraga said.

Maraga said the time has come for Kenyans to reject tribal politics.
He urged the voters to elect leaders who will serve all Kenyans without considering their tribe or region.
“A time has come. I call it a critical juncture in the history of our country. That we should say we can’t have this anymore. Let us elect people on their track record and competence to serve the whole nation. Somebody who is going to serve the whole nation,” he added.
Constitution and Formation of Government
He affirmed that the Constitution has clear guidelines on the formation of government.
Maraga said he will run the country properly by ensuring competence, regional balance, and bringing everybody on board.
I want us to revisit the aspirations of the Kenyan people as outlined in the constitution.
