Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital has declared a vacancy for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
In a notice issued on June 16, Mathari Hospital invited qualified Kenyans to apply for the position, which will be based at the hospital’s headquarters in Nairobi, and stated that the successful candidate is set to serve on a three-year contract, renewable based on performance.
“Directors of Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital invite applications from suitably qualified, dynamic, visionary, and results-oriented Kenyans to fill the following vacant position,” the notice read in part.
The recruitment is being conducted under the framework governing the hospital as a Semi-Autonomous Government Agency (SAGA).
According to the notice, applications must be submitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Directors on or before July 14, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
How to Apply For Mathari Hospital CEO Vacancy
To apply for the Chief Executive Officer position at Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital, candidates must submit a detailed curriculum vitae, copies of academic and professional certificates, a copy of their National Identity Card or Passport, and the names and contacts of three referees.
Further, applicants are directed to place the documents in a sealed envelope clearly marked “Application for Chief Executive Officer – Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital.”
Those shortlisted for the position will be required to provide clearance certificates from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and a Credit Reference Bureau (CRB).

According to the directors, all applications should be addressed to the Chairperson, Board of Directors, Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital, P.O. Box 40663–00100, Nairobi. Candidates may submit hard copies at the Chief Executive Officer’s Office or send their applications via email to [email protected] before the July 14, 2026, deadline.
“Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and canvassing in any form will lead to automatic disqualification,” the notice stated.
Qualifications and Duties
Mathari Hospital stated in its statement that to qualify, candidates must have at least 15 years of relevant work experience, including 10 years in senior management positions in either the public or private sector.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery, or another recognized health profession, as well as a master’s degree in a health-related field.
The hospital stated that candidates should be registered with the relevant professional body, possess a valid practicing license, and demonstrate knowledge of health sector regulations, public finance management, and procurement procedures.

Compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution is also mandatory.
The CEO will be responsible for the day-to-day administration and operations of the national referral facility under the direction of the Board.
The holder of the office will also serve as the hospital’s accounting officer and oversee implementation of Board decisions, strategic plans, budgets, procurement plans, and governance policies.
Other responsibilities include ensuring compliance with government regulations, managing human and financial resources, promoting good governance, mobilizing resources, and strengthening partnerships with stakeholders.
The successful applicant will also be expected to guide leadership development and succession planning within the institution.
