Dominic Wamugunda, popularly known as Father Wamugunda, is a Catholic priest, educator, and university administrator whose work has had a lasting influence on student welfare and leadership at the University of Nairobi (UoN).
He is recognized for his long service as Dean of Students, making him one of the longest‑serving holders of that office at the university.
Education Background
Father Wamugunda’s education combines his training as a Catholic priest with higher studies in communication and social sciences.
He began his studies in Kenya at St. Augustine Seminary, where he earned a Diploma in Philosophy. He later went to Rome to study theology, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Pontifical Urban University.
Wamugunda later focused on communication studies, completing a master’s degree in communication at the Salesian University in Rome and later earning a PhD in Communication from the University of Rome.

Dominic Wamugunda’s Career at the University of Nairobi
Dominic Wamugunda joined the University of Nairobi in 2000 as the Catholic Chaplain.
Wamugunda provided pastoral care and spiritual guidance to both students and staff across several campuses, becoming a familiar and trusted presence in the university community.
In 2004, he was appointed the 4th Dean of Students at the University of Nairobi. He served in this position for 16 years, until 2020, handling student life areas including welfare services, counseling, mentorship, career guidance, accommodation matters, and general student affairs, from admission through to graduation.
Father Wamugunda worked closely with students, staff, and university leadership to support thousands of young people as they navigated academic pressures, personal challenges, and career decisions.
Alongside his administrative duties, he also served as a lecturer in the Department of Sociology, teaching courses such as Sociology of Mass Communication and Human Relations.
Achievements and Legacy
Dominic Wamugunda’s greatest achievement was serving as Dean of Students at the University of Nairobi for 16 years, making him one of the longest‑serving Deans of Students in that role.
During this time, Dominic mentored and guided many students and played a key role in improving student welfare and support systems at the university.
His impact is reflected in the praise he has received from former students and colleagues, many of whom remember him for his dedication, calm leadership, and genuine care for students’ well‑being.
One former student commented on Wamugunda’s past interview, as the former Dean of Students and Sociology lecturer at the University of Nairobi, saying:
“You mentored me since 2008, and I learned a lot from you the hard way. I salute you for your great insight and the support you give to the young generation.”

After stepping down as Dean in 2020, Father Wamugunda remained involved in university life. He remained active in the Department of Sociology and supported students through mentorship programs.
Wamugunda combined his work as a priest with teaching and leadership roles at the university, influencing many generations of students at Kenya’s oldest public institution.
Wamugunda’s Public roles and community involvement
Dominic Wamugunda also participated in discussions on education, morality, and social issues beyond the university.
He wrote a weekly opinion column for the Sunday Nation, where he shared his views on education, society, and national matters in a way that was easy for the public to understand.
He regularly participated in national events, including giving sermons at state functions, and contributed to conversations about values, education, and the role of the church in public life.
In addition, he served as Chairman of the Board of The President’s Award Kenya. In this role, he supported programs that help young people develop skills, leadership abilities, and a spirit of community service.
