Nairobi police have launched a manhunt for a man who allegedly broke into a church in Kangemi area and stole over Sh1.5 million.
The money which was meant for development projects had been raised on Sunday, October 9 at the Kangemi’s ACK All Saints Mountain View Church.
Moreover, the sum of money was kept in a drawer at the Church’s altar overnight before its disappearance.
The church elder John Wainanina and treasurer Elizabeth Njoki went to the church to collect the money on Monday, October 10, when they found the doors ajar, which was unusual.
They two further took a closer look at the Lord’s table where bread and wine are consecrated, but to their utter dismay, it had been ransacked and the money missing.
According to the police report, the two officials immediately reported the matter to Kangemi police station. Additionally, preliminary investigations established that the caretaker, who has since gone missing, was responsible for the theft.
Likewise, they suspect the caretaker interfered with the premise’s electric power to deactivate the installed CCTV system before making away with the church development money.
Nevertheless, ACK All Saints Mountain View congregants who reside near the church premises could be seen in small groups conversing in low tones as they tried to fathom the disappearance of the community church money.
They could not believe how the trusted keeper of the parish would resort to such unbecoming conduct.
Furthermore, some of the church members who gathered around could be heard pronouncing curses at the suspect whom they said would never prosper. Others also called for his forgiveness should he resurface and repent his sins.
While confirming the incident, Nairobi police boss James Mugera stated that detectives have launched a manhunt for the suspect who lived within the church compound but immediately went into hiding following the incident.
