The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has addressed the flood situation that affected the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Saturday, April 27 evening.
In a statement on Sunday, April 28, the authority reported that heavy rainfall currently experienced in Nairobi led to flooding of the airport’s Tower Avenue Underpass prompting them to issue alternative access points to the airport.
The airports authority advised all motorists to use the main entrance to access and exit the airport until further notice.
“Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) wishes to notify the public that the heavy rainfall experienced in Nairobi this evening has led to flooding at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s Tower Avenue Underpass,” KAA noted.
“However, due to the situation, traffic is expected to be heavier than usual. We advise all vehicles to use the main entrance to access and exit the airport until further notice.”
They further warned of expected heavy traffic due to the changes at the airport’s access point.
As such, Kenya Airports Authority said their security teams and police officers have sealed off the affected area in a bid to ensure safety of all airport users.
“In response to this situation, KAA Security Teams and the Police have cordoned off the affected area to ensure the safety of all airport users and personnel,” read the statement in part.

“Normal flight operations at the airport are still ongoing, and access to all terminals remains available.
“However, due to the situation, traffic is expected to be heavier than usual. We advise all vehicles to use the main entrance to access and exit the airport until further notice.”
KAA also thanked members of the public as well as their clients for understanding vowing to diligently manage the situation.

Govt Explains Reason for JKIA Leakage
This comes barely two days after the Kenya Airports authority issued a statement explaining leaking roofs at JKIA.
KAA said the roofs at Terminals 1B and 1C were under repair by contractors in line with a directive from Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
In addition, the authority said the ongoing heavy rainfall had overwhelmed the temporary drainage infrastructure installed by the contractor in the project leading to the leakage experienced on Friday, April 26.
“Over the last few days, the heavy rainfall in Nairobi has adversely impacted on the temporary drainage infrastructure put by the contractor on site, resulting in the current leakages being experienced at the terminal,” the statement read in part.
