The Kenya Red Cross Nairobi Branch reported that around twenty households were affected in two fire incidents that occurred on the night of Sunday, October 13, 2024.
In an incident alert, the agency stated that the first fire was reported at Riverside Village in Viwandani, Nairobi County, at around 8:05 p.m.
The agency mentioned that the Nairobi City County (NCC) disaster management and the Community-Based Disaster Response Team (CBDRT) were at the scene.
In an update at around 9:47 p.m., the Red Cross branch confirmed the fire had been contained, but around twenty houses were affected.
“Viwandani, Riverside Fire Update: Fire has been contained by the Nairobi Fire Brigade alongside the Community-Based Disaster Response Team. Approximately 20 households have been affected,” the Red Cross said.
The Viwandani incident comes a month after another fire was reported in the estate on September 16, 2024.
Another fire outbreak was reported at Shauri Moyo at around 10:04 p.m.
The agency stated that CBDRTs and the firefighting department were at the scene to contain the fire.
“Another fire alert in Shauri Moyo near Jua Kali junction. Fire brigade and CBDRTs on scene. More updates to follow,” the Red Cross said.
A similar incident occurred at Shauri Moyo near Burma Market on September 10, where two business premises were affected, though no casualties were reported.

Sakaja’s Promise
On September 2, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja led an NCC disaster management team to assess the damages from a fire that destroyed traders’ properties on Desai Road, Ngara.

Sakaja said the tour aimed to evaluate the fire destruction, review the county government’s interventions, and plan to support the victims who lost their properties in the fire incidents.

Other Fire Incidents
Nairobi has experienced several fire incidents in recent months, prompting the Nairobi Red Cross branch to conduct fire-extinguishing training in parts of the county.
On September 19, a fire was reported in the Muslim area of Kawangware, Nairobi, three days after a fire outbreak at Mukuru Kwa Njenga near Muhindi Mweusi, Nairobi County.
Similarly, another fire broke out at Jua Kali Green Corner in Embakasi on September 14.
The NCC fire brigade responded and managed to extinguish it with no casualties reported, though 24 residential houses were completely destroyed by the fire.
Additionally, a fire outbreak was reported at Umoja 3, near Chokmatt supermarket, on August 29, 2024.
