The family of Chief Inspector Nicholas Aguk Oballa, who died in the line of duty in February, is demanding answers over the lack of investigations into his death.
Chief Inspector Oballa, who until his death served as the base commander at Embakasi Police station, was allegedly struck by a vehicle on February 7, 2025, while facilitating the Presidential convoy at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

He was knocked down by a defiant motorist while ushering the Presidential entourage into the VIP wing of JKIA at around 5:00 p.m.
His family now claims that the entire motorcade sped past the injured officer, leaving him behind after he was struck.

“So, this defiant vehicle defied the order of the first Police officer barricading vehicles from Utawala, he defied the second Police officer the rider in between, and then Mzee (Oballa) by instinct, I’m imagining he felt that this guy was to create some chaos on the motorcade so then he went into the road to stop him,” said his cousin Dickson Mbori Aomo in an interview on Citizen TV.
“This vehicle allegedly ran over him and went. In our understanding, that is a guarded area with CCTV cameras.”

The family further said that no details of the vehicle nor the occupants have been disclosed since the incident.
According to Mbori, the family demanded for CCTV footage but were told that the footages had blurry images.
Oballa’s cousin explained that preliminary reports indicated that following the accident, the Chief Inspector was rushed to hospital without his trouser.
“He was in full combat but only the top. He was in his inner pants. Eventually when we went to the station to clear off his possessions, we were told that they had washed the trousers, they had taken them to a laundry, and we were given all these uniforms already cleaned,” Oballa added.

The apparent inaction by the relevant departments has raised suspicions of a potential cover up.
Demand for justice
Chief Inspector Oballa’s son Vickins Bondo, on his part, expressed concern on how such kind of an accident could take place without authorities noticing the vehicle involved.
“If there was no conspiracy, then the Embakasi Police station, the traffic headquarters and all relevant security operators should be able to explain to the family what exactly transpired,” he said.
So far, the Director of Public Prosecutions together with the Inspector General of Police have confirmed receipt of the complaint.
“He was involved in the accident while on duty of clearing the road for the President. An errant driver who defied all odds and who allegedly was over speeding met Oballa when he was unaware. The errant driver sped off, and this is what we call a hit-and-run accident,” said a Police officer during Oballa’s burial.
