The government will absorb the forty-nine thousand students who applied for Public Service Commission (PSC) internships but were not placed.
In a statement on Tuesday, January 30, Public Service Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria said he held meeting with representatives of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) to absorb the students who applied for internships in 2023.
Kuria revealed that the government will partner with the private sector to provide these internship opportunities.
“I held a meeting this morning with various representatives of the KEPSA led by the KEPSA Executive Director, Ms. Gloria Ndekei.
The meeting discussed the Internship Programme Partnership that we will roll out soon between the government and the private sector,’ said Kuria.
The CS further said the government received 57,000 intern applications in 2023 out of which 8,000 have already been absorbed into the public service.
“The government seeks to partner with the private sector to be able to absorb the remainder who are equally qualified,” explained Kuria.
He said the state will work with all sectors across the country namely manufacturing, banking and insurance, telecommunication, retail, academia and hospitality among others.
About Public Service Internships
The Public Service Internship Programme (PSIP) is a government youth empowerment programme whose main objective is to offer university and college graduates the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and build skills in order to enhance their chances for employment, networking, and entrepreneurship.
The interns are deployed in different Ministries, State Departments, Corporations and Public Universities.
Here they work under PSC trained mentors and coaches who are responsible for guiding and nurturing them throughout and even after the internship period.

Requirements for Appointment
For appointment to an internship position, a candidate must:
1.Have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university.
2.Must have graduated.
3. Be proficient in computer skills.

Duties and responsibilities
The interns must complete duties mutually agreed upon and assigned by the supervisors.
In addition, they must also document relevant skills acquired in their areas of deployment and actively participate in any relevant mentorship activities and responsibilities designed for the programme.
It is a twelve (12) months nonrenewable contract with a monthly stipend rate as determined by the Government.
On successful completion of the internship, the interns are awarded a certificate.
