A Kenyan has opened up about his experience with programs that promise job opportunities in Qatar.

With the high rate of unemployment in Kenya, he and his friends enrolled in a program that assured them taxi driver jobs in Qatar.

However, when he arrived in Qatar, his expectations were completely shattered.

In a statement shared across various social media platforms, the Kenyan citizen revealed that upon arrival, he and other Kenyans were informed that their driving licenses were not recognized in Qatar.

A Kenyan ends up in construction work contrary to what he was promised

Left with no alternative means to survive, he resorted to working in construction, where he was promised a daily wage of Ksh 750.

Unfortunately, he was never paid for the days he worked.

Overwhelmed by frustration, he borrowed money from friends to purchase a ticket back to Kenya.

The Kenyan, who also happens to be a student, lamented that after returning home, he is unsure of what the future holds.

He now faces the challenge of raising money to pay his January school fees.

“I was promised a taxi job, but upon arrival, they said our driving licenses were not recognized.

I ended up working in construction, where I was to earn Ksh 750 per day, but I wasn’t paid. I had to borrow money for a ticket back home. Now, I’m here with no future and no school fees for January. I wish Mutua would send his own children there,” the statement read.

A social media user by the name Kaib Seddie said, “A mjengo guy in Kenya earns around 500 a day and doesn’t have to work in 45-degree heat, being treated like a slave, going home once in three years, and earning peanuts in a foreign and hostile country. This is slavery.”

Another user, Morris Juma, urged Kenyans enrolling in programs that promise jobs abroad to verify their visa details before proceeding to their places of employment.

Kenyans urged to check their visas before heading to places of employment

“Guys, if you are given those Qatar visas, visit the government Ministry of Interior website at http://moi.qa, log in with your passport number, and you will get details about that visa, the employer, and the profession for the job you are going to do.

If you have issues with the employer, visit http://adsla.qa.”

The statement by the Kenyan who travelled to Qatar in search of a taxi job comes at a time when the government is spearheading several programs aimed at taking Kenyans abroad, under an initiative commonly referred to as “Jobs Majuu.”

This initiative, primarily led by the Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, has seen many Kenyans secure employment in the Middle East, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Since the program began, most of the Kenyan workers have been placed in roles across various sectors:

  1. Construction and Technical Roles: Rigger signalmen, construction helpers, cleaners, storekeepers, electricians, plumbers, masons, tile layers, steel fixers, painters, welders, scaffolders, and various heavy machinery operators.
    2. Hospitality and Service Industry: Nurses, commis, demi chefs, chef de partie, kitchen helpers, barbacks, runners, waitresses, stewarding supervisors, kids’ attendants, hotel maintenance technicians, light vehicle drivers, and heavy vehicle drivers.
